VICTOR
SMETACEK (1995)
Professor
Victor Smetacek, the eighteenth recipient of the A.G. Huntsman Award, is
one of the world's leading biological oceanographers. His research
interests range over the ecology and natural history of the microflora and
microfauna in shallow-water ecosystems, the pelagic ecology of the
southern ocean, and biogeochemical processes, especially the vertical flux
of particles. He has worked in a spectrum of oceanographic regimes from
the coastal waters of northern Europe to the deep-sea ecosystem of the
Antarctic. When the occasion demands, he is not afraid to be an
iconoclast, but he is also known for his ability to synthesize information
from diverse fields to draw new conclusions about the structure and
function of the great biogeochemical cycles of the ocean. |
